The Quiet Wind of Spring
In the silver twilight of
an April sky the rays
of the disappearing sun
shine upon rhinestones
in the water before it’s
gone and the stillness
of the earth is riven
when the moon begins
to chase the sun and
the luminous crystals
of stars slowly appear
over the dusky horizon
while wingbeats of a
pygmy nuthatch lazily
sound in the wind of
the treetops above
the blue larkspur that
blossoms in the soft
ground by a small
gladiola and a sweet
apricot left by a sylvan
who lays among the
creamy delphiniums
and yellow thunbergia
dreaming of pink
azaleas that quietly
grow in the spring.
When Daylight Begins
When daylight begins to
end and windflowers lay
on your grave by the river
I hear the cry of sleepy
birds and your voice
saying my name in the
soft wind. Do I see you
hidden in the shade of a
fir tree or are you among
the robin is pillowed in
the white petals dreaming?
The scent of clover leads
me to a small garden where
lilac is dying and a dry willow
seldom sees the sun. I pour a
handful of water into the
tranquil earth so the shy light
you will live
like white morning glories
swaying gently in the cool wind.
The Dying Light of the Sun
In the dying light
of the sun I see you’ve
left a small indentation
on your bed and opened
the window where yellow
forsythias grow and the
scent of wet linden trees
smell like rain in the woods
where you wanted to go
while I wait for your spirit
in the Venetian mirror you
appeared in a week ago
and told me to always
leave lavender on your
pillow. When I see you
again promise me you will
stay till the russet sunset
turns grey and I will give
you a cut asteria to guide
you to heaven before the
next day.
