CHAPTER 1 Evfimi threw his travel pack on one of the chairs scattered about his study, and with a sigh, collapsed onto the cushioned chair behind his blackwood desk. His spy mistress, Hannah, had briefed him on the Gaeta mission since he was unable to take part in it. They did well, destroying all but one enemy outpost. However, that one outpost was the biggest defeat the Salvador-based Nexus group had ever suffered.

Over fifty of Daniel the Red’s warriors had died trying to destroy that single outpost even though Evfimi had sent a team to assist in that attack. And the injuries sustained by his people worried him more than the defeat or his ally’s losses.

Akulina, his second in command, and Simon, one of their battle mages, were both wounded seriously enough they could not survive the teleport home. They were presently being seen by Daniel the Red’s healers. Other members of Evfimi’s command staff, Mwamba and Michael were treated for minor injuries, and Brigit had a broken arm that was splinted and a healing spell cast on it to mend it quickly.
